What is the reciprocity rule?

Many of us have been victims of it, without even knowing it. According to Robert B. Cialdini, PhD., the rule is overpowering and very efficient. Many organizations have used it, and during this season, is especially employed.

How many times have you been in a place and some strange person gets close to you, gives you a free gift, flower, button, flier, card, etc., and in return expects a simple donation for their cause?

In his book, Mr. Cialdini explains that even though people might ordinarily dislike unsavory or unwelcome sales operators, disagreeable acquaintances, representatives of strange or unpopular organizations, the same can greatly increase the chance that we will do what they wish merely by providing us with a small favor prior to their request.

Presidents have used it, corporations and individuals that provide judicial or legislative officials with gifts and favors, expecting something in return when the people who have received the gift or favor get elected.

The Amway Corporation has used the principles of the rule very efficiently. They called it the BUG. The BUG consist of a collection of Amway products such as bottles of furniture polish, detergent, or shampoo, spray containers of deodorizes, in a specially designed tray or just a bag. The confidential Amway Career Manual then instruct the salesperson to leave a BUG with the potential customer for 24, 48 or even 72 hours at no cost or obligation. At the end of the trial period, and Amway representative will return to pick up orders for those of the products the customer wishes to purchase.

Although the obligation to repay constitutes the essence of the reciprocity rule, it is the obligation to receive that makes the rule so powerful. The rule was established to promote the development of reciprocal relationships between individuals so that a person could initiate such a relationship without the fear of loss.

Now that you know about the rule of reciprocation, I urge you, specially during this season to give without expecting anything in return. The bible says that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Since this is a promise, then we will believe in it.

Recession proof income

According to economists, since 1854, the U.S.A. has encountered 32 cycles of expansions and contractions, with an average of 17 months of contraction and 38 months of expansion. From 1991 to 2000, the U.S. experienced 37 quarters of economic expansion, the longest period of expansion on record.

For the past three recessions, the NBER decision has approximately conformed with the definition involving two consecutive quarters of decline. However the 2001 recession did not involve two consecutive quarters of decline, it was preceded by two quarters of alternating decline and weak growth.
